This bike tour leads along the language border between Swabia and Bavaria, across the gently hilly landscape of the foothills of the alps. Augsburg, a city made famous by Martin Luther and the Fugger family is the largest and most impressive city of this tour, whereas the Muranauer Moos offers a welcome “natural” counterpoint. The castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are certainly two of the highlights of this tour. The Lech cycling path follows the Roman road Via Claudia Augusta and allows for easy pedalling - but there are also some hilly sections on this tour.
Day 1 Arrival in Augsburg
Augsburg was a Roman provincial capital, but its modern cityscape is shaped by buildings from the middle ages, the Renaissance and the Rokoko period.
Day 2 Augsburg - Wörthsee, approx. 65 km/40 mi
Lush meadows and lakes with clear blue water right in front of the panorama offered by the alps: that’s what defines the Bavarian Alpine foothills.
Day 3 Wörthsee - Murnau, approx. 60 km/37 mi
The centre of this landscape is the Benedictine monastery of Andechs, famous for its beer. Murnau offers a listed market ensemble.
Day 4 Murnau - Füssen/Schwangau, approx. 60 km/37 mi
The Murnauer Moos is Central Europe’s larges moorland, and the pilgrimage site of Wieskirche was declared a UNESCO world heritage site.
Day 5 Füssen/Schwangau - Schongau, approx. 50 km/31 mi
The castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are visible from far afield, while your tour will take you further along the river Lech.
Day 6 Schongau - Landsberg/Lech, approx. 35 km/22 mi
The fortress town of Schongau boasts a fully preserved town wall sorrounding it. The Lech cycle path will leisurely lead you to Landsberg, which is home to a medieval historic centre.
Day 7 Landsberg/Lech - Augsburg, approx. 45 km/28 mi
Between Kaufering and Königsbrunn you’ll find some of the best-preserved sections of the Roman Via Claudia. Soon, you’ll be reaching Augsburg, where you’ll be able to retrace the steps of the Fugger family.
